Working at the travel agency does have some big perks. One of them is free trips! Our first trip outside of Antigua was a free one to Monterrico! Monterrico is a beachside town and is known as the best beach in Guatemala. Until a few years ago it was just a small fishing town, but some organizations have helped to turn it into a more touristy area. It’s about a 3 hour drive from Antigua, so at 8am we left the hostel along with 5 other people and we got to Monterrico around 10:30.

We started off just walking along the beach. This beach isn’t like Lake Superior, the waves are HUGE! We had heard that we weren’t supposed to swim because there’s an undertow, so I didn’t bring a swimsuit. I had just planned to wade into the water, but that didn’t work very well.

Here’s Loren… standing in the same spot for all these pictures. This was his first time in the Pacific Ocean!

My turn!

This wave surprised me!

Next we took some time to sit on the beach and soak up some sun!

That’s where I got my massive sunburn. Sometimes I forget that sun = pain. We decided to take a walk around the town and take a little break from the sun.

All of the buildings look like this with palm leaf roofs.

Next we went to get some ceviches. They are a really typical beach food. It’s basically pico de gallo (tomatoes, onions, cilantro, garlic) with shrimp or fish. We chose shrimp. Then you get crackers to eat with them.

My ceviche

Loren’s ceviche with all the avocados from mine.

Happy boy with his finished ceviche.

This is all I could eat. I was so full!

We got back on a shuttle around 4:00 and we were back to Antigua by 6:45. We were hoping to see another procession, but it had already gone by. So instead we decided to head home and get some much-needed sleep!
